APRIL IS NATIONAL POETRY MONTH
Riley Avenue First Grade Poetry Fair(April 6, 2017) Riley Avenue hosted a FIRST GRADE POETRY FAIR to celebrate the completion of their poetry unit. First graders read a variety of children's poets and then use this experience to try out a similar style of poetry.
The Riley Avenue Student Council helped distribute the pockets and greet the parents. Once inside the cafeteria, the fun began. Each first grader had three or four poems on their trifold board, which was decorated to reflect the subjects of the poems they had written, and one poem to give away. Parents, siblings, grandparents, teachers, and community members came to reinforce this first foray into poetry. Topics for their poems often included siblings, parents, and pets. One of my favorites, however, (by Tyler) was entitled "Brain". |

Here are just a few of the poems that made their way into my pocket. Thanks, first graders (and teachers) for "the poetic experience"!
